Bookforum magazine will resume publication under the stewardship of the Nation. The first issue of the relaunched quarterly, which ceased publication in December 2022, will appear in August 2023.
Effective immediately, the Nation will acquire Bookforum’s archives and intellectual property and will resume its publication with the magazine’s full existing editorial staff led by Michael Miller. Bookforum's editorial operations will remain separate and editorially independent from the Nation, which publishes its own books coverage.
The shuttering of Bookforum last year came on the heels of the recent acquisition of Bookforum's sister magazine Artforum by Penske Media Corporation; Bookforum, which was founded in 1994, was not part of that acquisition. The news roiled the literary community as spaces for book criticism continued to dwindle.
“Bookforum has been an important publication for decades," said Nation president Bhaskar Sunkara in a statement, "and we’re looking forward to helping it continue on into the future."
