Greetings, lover of true stories. Welcome to a new year in documentary filmmaking. Right about now—following the 2023 Oscar nominations—we hope your favorite feature from last year made the cut. Over at Esquire, we're just happy that Fire of Love didn't get snubbed. Now,nearing the end of January, we've just about hit that time of year when we start seeing buzz from the Sundance Film Festival, and enough of a tentative movie release calendar to begin our yearly ritual: sharing with you, reader, which upcoming films in the genre we're most excited to see.

Netflix will drop the year's first two big documentaries, Pamela, a love story and Bill Russell: Legend, in the coming weeks. The rest of the slate? Save for a couple exceptions—anyone ready for that Sarah Lawrence College cult documentary?—most of the films on our radar won't arrive until later in the year. Still, if there's going to be a Michael J. Fox film from an Oscar-winning director, we're here to make sure you know about it. Read on for our most anticipated documentaries of 2023.
